Removing Skunk Odor from Artificial Turf

September 1, 2017

When skunks are startled, they’ll leave behind an odor that makes it next to impossible to enjoy your artificial turf lawn. No one wants to sit outside when that smell is lingering in the air. Luckily, removing skunk odor from artificial turf doesn’t have to be difficult. You might be able to get rid of it with items you already have in your home. In fact, there are even products designed to make removing skunk odor from artificial turf easier. At Watersavers Turf, we’ll be more than happy to offer tips and products for removing skunk odor.

Getting Rid of Skunk Smell

Skunk smell can quickly turn your perfect lawn into an area you and all your guests try to avoid. Unfortunately, you can’t control when a skunk releases their odor. Imagine if one of these critters visited you just a few days before you were going to host a backyard party. That skunk smell can ruin your plans if you don’t take steps to remove it. If you’re trying to get skunk smell out of your lawn, consider these tips:

Hydrogen Peroxide & Baking Soda

The Humane Society recommends this tactic if your dog has been skunked, but it can also work on your synthetic turf lawn if you act fast. Combine a quart of three-percent hydrogen peroxide solution with a quarter cup of baking soda and a teaspoon of liquid dish soap. Scrub the affected area with this mixture. Wear clothes you’re not attached too in case any smell rubs off on them. Stick with long pants, sleeves, and gloves to protect yourself.

If you get to work fast enough, this remedy should get rid of the skunk odor for good. Don’t bother taking a trip to the store to pick up hydrogen peroxide if you don’t have any. Instead, just use vinegar and water solution instead. It’s better to act fast than to go out of your way for a bottle of peroxide. When the smell disappears, make sure you rinse it off because peroxide is also bleach. Leaving it on too long can affect the color of your artificial turf.

Castor Oil & Detergent

This trick won’t get rid of a skunk’s odor, but it will keep them from coming back to your house. Just create a blend of castor oil and dish-washing detergent. Apply it around the perimeter of your lawn with a spray bottle to drive away skunks.

For the best results, do this during the day, when the skunk is not likely to be out foraging. If you disturb a skunk while they’re on your lawn, they might end up spraying you or your yard.

Skunk Deterrent – Orange and Lemon Peels

This is another way to keep skunks out of your lawn. It’s the better option if you don’t like the idea of spraying oil and detergent all over your property. All you need to do is grab some orange or lemon peels and evenly scatter them across the turf.

Skunks and many other pests don’t respond well to citrus. The scent isn’t just unpleasant to them—it also makes it hard for them to smell food sources.

Protecting Artificial Grass from Pets

Skunks aren’t the only ones that leave behind their distinct odor on your artificial grass. Pets can too. Artificial grass is ideal for pet owners due to its safety and strength. However, letting your little buddy spend time on it could lead to accidents if they decide to relieve themselves on the lawn. If you have a pet who likes to roam your artificial grass lawn, you should install the right infill.

At Watersavers Turf, we carry ZeoFill organic infill. This non-toxic product uses natural processes to fight pet odors. For instance, dog urine starts to smell due to a chemical breakdown. This type of infill stops that breakdown before it starts. We also have items like chicken wire to keep pests out of your lawn.
